What have we done so far?

This week was focused on refining existing mechanics in our game such as movement and static abilities. The movement system had to be overhauled in order to sustain the switching of different forms without encountering engine issues such as teleportation problems that were present in our previous build. This made our movement system more modular and required far less code to add new forms. Not only was the movement system improved, but we added controller support using Unity’s new input system. In addition to this, the shocking system was refined so that climbing carpet walls was distinct from carpet floors. Finally, in terms of programming, the health system was improved to make it a forgiving three-life system that spawns the character back to where they lost a life. In terms of art and design, we have created a sock model as well as created a carpet texture.

What are our next steps?

Our next steps are to work on the feedback that was given to us, by simplifying our scope and removing unnecessary mechanics that do not fit our sock theme. We must also figure out what mechanics will make our game unique and build on them. Aside from mechanics, we are now focusing on making our first level.

What are important discoveries we’ve made along the way?

As we make progress on the game, we are discovering that we need to continue to narrow down the scope to make our game feel unique. Such elements that should be removed from the game based on the feedback provided during our GDD presentation include the ball rolling form and other mechanics not directly related to the sock theme.
